Global SoL News March 2000
SoL = Knowledge, Learning, Change
SoL - The Society for Organizational Learning
SoL is about
- Building and diffusing knowledge for fundamental institutional change
- Leading, learning and working together
- Building organizations worthy of people's fullest commitment
- Sharing theories, concepts and practices on learning how to learn and on learning how to share
- Integrating Research, Capacity building and Practice
- Without teaching, helping the world institutions to understand learning
- Creating our futures through the work of local communities and bringing us together globally
SoL is about
- Living and practicing SoL's guiding, organizing and ethical principles
- How to facilitate the emergence of a SoL Global Community with 100/1000 communities around the world
-Organized locally
-Networked globally
-Self-organized not "rolled out"
-Self-governed not hierarchically controlled
Towards a self-organizing Global SoL Network
As in all living systems, the growth of SoL as a global network cannot be controlled or pre-determined. Just as every cell is unique, every embodiment of SoL's basic pattern of organizing will be shaped by the institutions and individuals who comprise its members. Each SoL Community will pursue their own aspirations and issues and will adapt SoL's basic design to the requirements of their social and cultural environment. The only requirement is that the community be committed to SoL's purpose and principles and be organized within the framework of the SoL international Constitution (to be defined). In this way, we hope that SoL will emerge organically as a unique global community dedicated to fundamental institutional innovation.
Towards a Learning Manifesto
Creating a movement for human revival and growth, developing global learning capabilities believing that
- We are future creating creatures
- We create our futures through action
- We expand our capacity for action through learning
- Learning expands itself in communities. Collaboration is vital
- We generate universal aspirations based on our local community experiences
- Innovation led by practitioners is essential, but without research to translate new practices into better theory and method, there is no larger scale learning
