Marilyn and her research partner, Charles Parry, recently completed a research study into the evolution of the U.S. Army’s After Action Review and its adoption by the civilian sector. They have also studied other approaches to team learning, mobilizing best practices and the transfer of knowledge, including the Boston Police Department’s Crime Analysis Meetings. They have codified their findings into a discipline referred to as "Emergent Learning" and created the Emergent Learning MapTM to give teams a simple, standardized structure for designing their own learning processes.

Marilyn has worked extensively with Nortel Networks over the past three years to integrate learning strategies and knowledge management into a number of business units and corporate initiatives. Nortel has created a virtual Emergent Learning Map, which resides on their Time-To-Market website. Other recent clients include the Aspen Institute, Fidelity Investments, Harvard Medical School, IBM Research, Power Construction and the Smithsonian Institution. In the non-profit sector, Marilyn has conducted knowledge-sharing conferences for a number of organizations, including the Ford Foundation and the Nature Conservancy.

Prior to opening her consulting practice eleven years ago, Marilyn was president of Learning to Learn, Inc., providing critical thinking skills programs to universities and corporations. She is a charter member of SoL and serves as chair of the James Madison College Board of Visitors, a residential policy sciences college at Michigan State University.
