Forum Mission
The SoL Forum on Business Innovation for Sustainability is designed for leaders in diverse positions committed to developing and integrating more sustainable business practices for environmental and social prosperity as well as a means for spurring innovation, efficiency, and economic vitality.
The Forum will serve as a catalyst for accelerated learning and thinking on sustainability through innovative best practice presentations, solutions-driven conversations and a systems approach
Plenary Sessions Include:
- Moving Beyond the Bubble Economy This opening keynote presentation by Peter Senge will be based on the first essay in his forthcoming book, Learning for Sustainability.
- Preparing BP for the 21st Century: Moving from Fossil Fuels to Renewable Sources of Energy with Vivienne Cox, executive vice president and chief executive for gas power and renewables, BP.
- What is the Ideal Role of Government in Creating Sustainability? This panel discussion will give people from the private and public sectors the opportunity to craft an "ideal" blend of regulatory and market forces for optimizing sustainability.
- Living and Leading in Favor of the Future: Stories from Traditional Mission-Based Companies Leaders from BP, Nike, Whole Foods, Coca-Cola, Ford, and Seventh Generation will share the highs and lows they've experienced during their journeys to sustainability.
- Real and Perceived Barriers to Change: What Will it Take for Us to REALLY Change? In this session, several change theories will be presented and discussed. We will then shift to café conversations to further uncover the actual barriers to change and explore practical steps to move us along the path to sustainability.
- Systems Citizenship: Food, Water, Energy, and Transportation This plenary conversation will be facilitated by Peter Senge and will focus on the sustainability of the key systems on which all life and commerce depends. This will be the first time Peter Senge shares his unique perspective on the mental model shift required to create sustainability for the future.
- Janine Benyus on Biomimicry
What Makes the Forum Unique?
-
Active Practice of Organizational Learning Tools and Disciplines - All of the sessions will feature the practice of at least one of the 5 disciplines: systems thinking, dialogue, mental models, personal mastery and vision. The value and relevance of each will be highlighted and discussed. There will also be time for practice and application of each of the skills.
- World Cafe Conversations - Each day's schedule includes a World Café Conversation. These sessions replicate the way natural learning, discovery and interaction occurs: through expanding networks of honest, open conversation. During these sessions, we will move rapidly from polite conversation, toward meaningful dialogue in which collaborative learning and collective change can really occur.
- Practical Skills and Tools for Creating Sustainability - We understand the day-to-day challenges associated with improving your organizations sustainability. We have uncovered the most current research and techniques to help you in your daily sustainability work.
During this event, you will improve your ability to:
- Use a systems approach for approaching sustainability challenges
- Measure and communicate the impact of your sustainability efforts
- Leverage sustainability efforts through your organizations value chain
- Implement organizational learning practices to ensure positive change
- Create effective messaging campaigns for your customers, co-workers and suppliers
- Foster collaboration across your supply chain
- Develop cross-sector partnerships to increase your effectiveness
