Youth Core Competency Workshop
June 10th - June 11th 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
The Youth Leadership Institute was developed by volunteer
members of SoL to give young people access to powerful leadership concepts
and practices and the freedom to make a difference in themselves, their
families, their schools, and their communities. This curriculum draws
heavily upon the work of Dr. Senge, the SoL Core Competency Course and
the practices of the developers. The material has been tailored specifically
for delivery to youth and has been piloted in traditional educational
settings as well as with at-risk youth in an inner city environment.
This workshop is intended both for youth (age 13-18)
and adults/educators who are interested in learning more about delivering
this material and creating schools that learn. By the end of this session,
participation in this session will provide all attendees with exposure
to the disciplines of organizational learning in this highly intensive,
experiential, and fun workshop. A major outcome of the workshop will be
the creation of shared visions/projects that participants will be encouraged
to collaborate on after the Global Forum. At a minimum, the participants
will investigate ways in which they can apply the workshop experience
in co-creating an ongoing international community of learners.
Presenters:
Micah Fierstein is founder and director of The Change Institute
in Portland, Oregon. The Change Institute was created to build mutual
learning contracts with educators to adapt and design new tools to create
high performance learning communities. Micah Fierstein is a Doctor of
Education.
Patrick Parker-Roach is the founder and president of
ThoughtRoads, Inc., a company helping organizations navigate major change
initiatives where people, advanced technology and business needs intersect.
He also devotes time to inmates, youth at risk, and the philosophy of
Restorative Justice in the hope of breaking the cycles of violence in
today's society.

Youth and Education Network (YEN) Meeting
Wednesday June 11th 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
SoL has established a network entitled the Youth
and Education Network, or YEN, as part of its commitment
to developing schools and communities that learn. The purpose of YEN is
to bring together individuals and organizations committed to creating
rich learning and development environments for young people that foster
habits of lifelong learning and responsible citizenship. All who share
in this passion - education and business practitioners, students, researchers,
consultants, community leaders, and parents - are welcome to participate
in YEN. The YEN gathering will provide an opportunity for us to share
the richness and diversity of our work and ideas with one another and
deepen our exposure to organizational learning practices worldwide as
applied to youth development and education. Ideas for ways to collaborate
may emerge as we connect with and learn from one another. In the spirit
of the Global Forum theme of "inventing desired futures", we will convene
in dialogue about key questions pertaining to our aspirations for learning
and youth development in a global society. We will explore ways of being
together in a vibrant and supportive network that nurtures continued dialogue
and collaboration.
If you plan to participate in the YEN session, or
otherwise have an interest in YEN, you are invited to introduce yourself
prior to the session by responding to a brief questionnaire that will
be posted on the SoL web site beginning in March 2003. The information
provided will be made accessible to all who register for the session or
who indicate a desire to take part in YEN.
