Theme
The theme of this first SoL Global Forum was "Learning in Organizations: Inventing Desired Futures in a Global Society". Learning from the future rather than learning only from the past is a key competence for all of us, whether we practice in business, government, or civil society. And while we can increase our knowledge by becoming more aware of what we are accomplishing separately, many of our desired futures will only be achieved together. The Global Forum was an opportunity to exchange, reflect, and work together on topics of personal and global concern.

Purpose & Goals
The Global Forum was designed to be a community meeting for all SoL members and others interested in organizational learning. The meeting provided an opportunity to:

  • Deepen our understanding of how we collectively create the futures we desire through exposure to leading edge thinking and a rich diversity of examples from around the world;
  • Improve organizational performance by sharing and reflecting on projects underway; integrating the perspectives of practitioners, researchers and consultants;
  • Strengthen and expand our networks of relationships, creating new opportunities for cooperation and joint action; and
  • Continue to develop the SoL global network as an active learning community.

SoL was founded in April of 1997 as an intentional action learning community and member-governed organization bringing together researchers, consultants and organizational practitioners. Today, there are more than 35 SoL communities and networks around the world. This 1st SoL Global Forum was a place to share the work being done. A global community thrives or dies through the quality of the connections and action inside it. In the Global Forum the future is being created and connections are being made for future action.

Participants
Three hundred and thirty people from 35 countries participated in the recent 1st SoL Global Forum in Espoo, Finland.

The meeting language was English.
