How do I get to Muscat?

Muscat, Oman (airport code MCT) connects easily to cities worldwide, including Paris, London, and Amsterdam. Or take advantage of low fares to Dubai or Doha offered by many airlines, and then connect to Muscat with frequent flights. Booking early is the key to finding the lowest fares.

Visas

Most participants will be able to travel with their passports as their only travel documents. While visa are readily available at the airport, you may also obtain them prior to travel through an Omani embassy, consulate or a visa service. It is always safest to obtain a visa prior to your departure especially if you have any questions about the viability of your travel.

The official website for Omani visas is www.rop.gov.om/english/dg_passport_visa_singleentry.asp which includes the list of for whom visa formalities are required prior to travel. As with all international travel, we suggest that you travel with a copy of your passport and all travel documents as well.

Currency & Banking

The unit of currency is the Omani Rial (RO) comprising 1000 baizas and is fixed to the USD at $2.58. The approximate conversion of the Omani Rial is RO 1.000: 1.77 EUR: 1.26 GBP. The rates fluctuate with the market usually in a narrow range around the USD. In general, banking hours are Saturday to Wednesday from 8 am to noon, and Thursday from 8 - 11am. Moneychangers are also open from 4 pm to 7 pm. Automatic teller machines linked to the major international networks are widely available with English access using a 4 digit PIN.

Typical Attire

Oman is among the liberal countries in the Middle East for dress. When visiting the country it is important that you dress modestly but comfortably. Women should consider mid-length skirts or dresses (below the knee) or lose fitting slacks. Short sleeves are okay and the shoulders should be covered when in public. Covering the head is at the individual’s discretion, except when entering a mosque. Skimpy shorts should never be worn in public by men nor women and beachwear should be limited to the beach or the hotel pool. Tight-fitting clothes should be avoided as they may cause offense.
