A PREVIEW OF THE PROGRAM FOR RESEARCH GREENHOUSE III, October 28-29, 2002
While the program is still being finalized, we have accepted a number of compelling proposals and can report that the main topic areas emerging are:
- Action Research and Issues of Collaboration
- Leadership and Organizational Transformation
- Systems Thinking, Chaos, and Complexity
As with our two previous greenhouse gatherings, an important component of the G3 will be the "seekers" B those who come mainly to seek help with developing ideas and plans that might involve research. Some, such as Sanofi, have already identified the question they will bring; others are expected and will be welcome (contact Research Coordinator, Barry Sugarman). Some projects being presented actually developed out of earlier Greenhouses. Some, such as Project LEAD, are returning to plan the next stage in their evolution. Diversity is assured; we already have participation from Austria, Canada, South Africa, and Japan.
Among the featured presenters will be:
- John Sterman (Professor of Management, MIT Sloan School, and head of the Systems Dynamics program)
- Arjan Overwater, Senior VP, Unilever, who will speak about the companyBs latest work in leadership development and their plans for further research on the key success factors in organizational transformation. Exemplifying the spirit of the SoL Greenhouse, he will be looking for new ideas and partners in Unilever's research, and sharing some cutting-edge work in which he has been closely involved.
- David Schwandt, Professor and Director of the doctoral program in HRD leadership, GWU, and other presentations representing the work going on at George Washington University, our co-sponsors for this Greenhouse.
Several presentations will feature collaborations between researchers, consultants and managers. For example:
- Alain Gauthier, SoL consultant member, and Bill Torbert, Boston College
"Interweaving Multiple Types of Action Research in Co-leading Organizational Transformations"
Ellen Pruyne, Harvard University, and Michael Pergola, Wachovia Corporation "From Consultancy to Practice to Research in Building a Learning Organization: The Experience at Wachovia Corporation"
Paulette Seymour, VP, Christine Klucznik, VP, (Mass. Memorial Medical Center, University of Massachusetts) and Vince Pelote, SoL research member. "Nursing leadership at UMMC embarked on a comprehensive leadership development strategy utilizing action research and reflective learning. The original strategy was to improve employee motivation or climate by differentiating leadership competencies."
Rita Kowalski, Dan Kowalski, Ellen Kollar, U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Joel Harmon and Dan Twomey, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Lyle Yorks, Columbia University, and Joel H. Neuman, SUNY "New challenges and learning from this large-scale collaborative research project. with academic-practitioner action-learning teams, focused on a national study of workplace stress and aggression in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)." Their presentation at the recent Academy of Management was highly acclaimed.
