A Landmark SoL Meeting In Detroit
Contributed by Cynthia Way, SoL Consulant Member
On September 18 - 21, 2006 a landmark meeting in the history of SoL was held in Detroit. Hosted by Ford Motor Company and sponsored by SoL, the meeting included participation of the SoL constituencies - organizational members, Liaison Officers, consultants, researchers, and SoL council members. SoL Members Converge at Energy Conversion Devices
Notes by Michael Sales, SoL Consultant Member
On the very rainy morning of September 18, 2006, seven SoL members (Carol Gorelick, Sherry Immediato, Madeline Nold, Michael Sales, Anika Schriefer, Jean Tully, and Michael Yacavone) paid a visit to Energy Conversion Devices (ECD) as a learning journey associated with the All SoL Convergence in Detroit that occurred September 18-21. Energy Conversion Devices is a forty-six-year-old company founded by Stan and Iris Ovshinsky, where some of the most advanced work in the world is being done on thin film photovoltaics, solid state hydrogen, nickel metal hydride, and fuel cells. Many people consider the company the foundation stone of what is commonly called "The Hydrogen Economy," a sweeping set of innovations that promise to provide a virtually infinite amount of energy with zero negative environmental impact. Upcoming SoL Gatherings
Upcoming meetings offer opportunities for SoL members to broaden their networks and deepen their involvement.
On Wednesday November 15, SoL will host a World Café and lunch for SoL members following Peter Senge's keynote address, "We've Never Been Here Before," at the Pegasus Systems Thinking in Action Conference in Boston. Peter Senge, Sherry Immediato, and members of the SoL Council will participate in discussions with SoL members on topics that emerge at the conference. Read more and register for the SoL World Café...
In March of 2007, the SoL Sustainability Consortium will hold The Second SoL Business Innovation for Sustainability Forum in Atlanta. The Coca-Cola Company will serve as local sponsor for this meeting. This forum is designed for all SoL members and is open to the public.
Many of SoL's local community coordinators will be meeting later this fall to consider the types of global community gatherings that they will offer in 2007. If you have an interest in being an active participant in a design team for such an event, please contact Jean Macdonald at the SoL office.
Many SoL members have indicated interest in creating simple, low cost opportunities for virtual gatherings. Similar networks host periodic teleconferences featuring a guest discussion leader, recent authors, organizational case studies, and consulting "clinics." We would like to know if members are interested in experimenting with a series of community-organized teleconferences. This would require members of the SoL community to volunteer to schedule, host, and present. The SoL staff would publicize the call(s) and provide access to any documents presenters may want to share.
If you are interested in taking a leadership role in initiating community organized events, or if you would like to identify yourself as a resource to those who do volunteer, please contact SoL's Projects and Marketing Assistant, Tatiana Lewis, at tatiana@solonline.org or +1-617-300- 9528.

Profit for Life: How Capitalism Excels, A New SoL Publication by Jay Bragdon
Profit for Life: How Capitalism Excels introduces a radical new premise to business leaders and investors that brings clarity to a corporate world beset by debt, scandal and chaos: living assets (people and nature) are far more important to corporate health than non-living (capital) assets. Most companies put capital assets first and are suffering for it. A few - like HSBC, Nucor, Toyota, Alcoa - put living assets first and are thriving. Companies that steward living assets - their real sources of wealth - have natural advantages over those that simply look to end results such as returns on capital and earnings per share. This book, based on the analytic model that companies are living systems (de Geus) and operate within larger living systems (Senge), proves living assets, rather than capital assets, are the true source of corporate energy and innovation.

Presence in Action: An Introduction to Theory U
A New DVD Featuring C. Otto Scharmer
SoL has released its first DVD, Presence in Action: An Introduction to Theory U, which features C. Otto Scharmer's keynote address from the SoL Global Forum in Vienna, September 2005.
In three segments, "Shifting the Social Field," "Facing Three Enemies," and "A 12-Step Presencing Practice," Otto Scharmer introduces the social technology of presencing to management and management science. "Presencing," a blend of "presence" and "sensing," refers to the ability to sense and bring into the present one's highest future potential. Scharmer shows us our current blind spot and encourages co-creation of a future that depends on each of us.
The learning and change theories that guide leaders' actions are based on reflecting on experiences of the past. But the complex challenges facing us today require a new form of learning - one that connects us to the emerging future.

Peter Senge "Quicktalks" Now Available on SoL's Website
In early October the Targeted Learning Corporation worked with Peter Senge to record a series of nine short recordings, three of which are now available on SoL's website in MP3 format. Each quicktalk provides a glimpse into Peter's current thinking on some of today's most pressing organizational issues and offers refreshing perspectives for exploration.
Impact of Globalization 5 minutes
Organizational Culture and Learning 5 minutes
Transformational Change 3 minutes
Stay tuned! The remaining six quicktalks will be released on the SoL website soon. .........................................................................
SoL's Hastily Formed Networks Project
Momentum continues to accelerate both in terms of interest and participation in SoL's Hastily Formed Networks Project. In May, George Roth, Senior researcher at MIT, presented a research proposal at the May Liaison Meeting for capturing the learning that is occurring around forming, leading, and deploying networks in urgent organizational situations in which central authority is absent (or in some cases in spite of central authority).
New organizations joining current participants which include Ford, Boeing, DoD-Naval Post Graduate School, SoL, The Feinstein International Famine Center, are DTE and The World Bank Institute. A face-to-face meeting is scheduled for October 2 which will be held at and hosted by the World Bank Institute.

Reflections: The SoL Journal Volume 7, Issue 3
Sustainability is one of many focused areas of interest within the SoL community, and the theme of this issue (Vol. 7, No. 3) of Reflections. Many of our corporate members became interested in the subject of sustainability when they recognized that they needed to lessen or neutralize the environmental impact of their processes, services, and products. Their need and desire coalesced interest, and SoL has been home to the SoL Sustainability Consortium since 1999. The Consortium supports its members' intention to create value and change by combining the analytical rigor of systems thinking with insight into how social networks improve the triple bottom line (people, planet, and profit). SoL has also spawned a number of related initiatives in which SoL members participate, including The European Sustainability Group, Project ELIAS, and the Sustainable Food Lab. In addition, SoL's newest publication, Profit for Life by Jay Bragdon, represents a commitment to promote research and dialogue on the relationship between corporate practices, social and environmental impact, and business results.
Articles in this issue include:
- Systems Citizenship: The Leadership Mandate for This Millennium by Peter Senge
- The Natural Step: A Vision for Sustainable Societies by Manfred Mack and Karl-Henrik Robert
- Gross National Happiness: Measuring What Matters by Frank Dixon
- Seventh Generation: Education for the Consumer Products Business by Jeff Hollender
- Building a Sustainablity Institute in Russia by Jeff Lindstrom
- Cloudy Skies: Assessing Public Understanding of Global Warming by John Sterman and Linda Booth Sweeney
- Book excerpt from Profit for Life by Joseph H. (Jay) Bragdon.
One of SoL's principles is titled "Aligning with Nature." This guiding idea speaks to how we learn not only from each other, but from the living world around us: "It is essential that organizations evolve to be in greater harmony with human nature and with the natural world." We hope the range of articles in this issue will help you both harmonize with and influence the systems of which you are a part. Want to read more? Leadership and Learning for Sustainability: Conversations on the Art and Practice of Sustainable Enterprise
Beyond "SustainabilityReporting:" How Measuring What Matters Can Drive Engagement, Innovation and Business Performance
November 8, 1-2:30 EST
An audio conference featuring Peter M. Senge, Founding chairperson of SoL, the Society for Organizational Learning and author of The Fifth Discipline: the Art and Practice of the Learning Organization in conversation with: Gil Friend, CEO of Natural Logic on strategic, innovative, performance driven business paths informed by 3.5 billion years of free planetary R&D!
Everyone knows that what gets measured gets done. Like many things that "everyone knows," that's not exactly true, of course. But still, "measuring sustainability" is an increasingly hot topic
from Corporate Social Responsibility reporting to the Global Reporting Initiative, from carbon footprints to ecological footprints to social footprints to "making the business case", S-BAR sustainable business rating system
and one still mired in CP Snow's "two worlds" dilemma of numbers "vs" meaning.
Gil Friend, CEO of the strategic consulting firm Natural Logic, takes an unusual approach to the challenge
deeply committed to providing "generative feedback systems" at all levels of an organization... that "measure sustainability" not just to provide a historical record or a current competitive score, but to feed a new conversation in organizations.. one that fosters innovation... and drives change.

SoL Finland - SoL Conference 2006!
November 13-14, 2006
Helsinki, Finland
SoL Finland welcomes you to SoL Conference 2006, which will be held in November at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki. Our main theme this year is: Fire, Passion and Excellence.
Fire has been a mystical phenomenon throughout the time. Our distant ancestors marveled at the glow of fire. Simultaneously fire aroused fear and respect. Fire had power. They believed that the creator of fire was a higher force. This belief is reflected in the paintings found on the walls of ancient caves. Fire meant life for tribes. It kept them warm and protected them from wild animals. It brought light into the darkness. Wandering hunters met also members of other tribes on their hunting trips. At the night fall the tribe leaders gathered their tribes together around a common fire and exchanged their stories on the secrets of fire through tales and dancing. Thus the story of fire spread around the whole world.
At SoL Conference 2006, fire is the symbol for knowledge. Therefore, we gather around a camp fire, as our ancestors did in their time, to share news and ideas.
The camp fires will be lit on the 13 and 14 of November in Finlandia Hall, Helsinki, Finland. Our leading torch carrier is Brasilian Marcial Losada, whose ideas on High Performing Teams are hot topics of conversation around the world.
The leading role is, however, reserved for you. That has been the source of our motivation for organizing various inspiring and glowing camp fires for your benefit - they are workshops, which create pathways of teams, communities, leadership and well-being.
On these paths you will have an opportunity to solve your current and future challenges together with other like-minded participants. You will be equipped with tools for your own job as a manager as well as for the use of your whole organization. We will offer you the suitable tools for starting the fire and during the conference days you will surely further develop them into your own direction.
You find more information about the programme, enrollment and contact details from the following Power Point presentation or our webpage www.solconference.com/eng Learn more about SoL Finland.

SoL Israel
On September 20, approximately 35 people gathered in Israel to explore their common interest in complexity theory and human systems. This gathering was an initiative of members of the SoL Israel community, who plan to develop a network that meets regularly around these issues.
The first meeting was devoted to listening to participants' stories of using the complexity framework in their particular field. Meeting participants professional backgrounds included law, architecture, medicine, physics, psychology, OD, education, business. The next meeting will focus on developing a shared understanding of the basic ideas of complexity theory, as different people had different ideas about this framework.
We invite SoL members to send us interesting materials and invitations regarding complexity.
Founded in 2001, the SoL Israeli fractal is a small active group of around 10 people, most of who are OD practitioners. Members from SoL Israel have participated in SoL's global forums in Finland and Vienna. They have a sub group dealing with sustainability led by Dr. Edna Pasher. This group initiated a workshop for managers on sustainable development and is planning next steps.

Consciousness, Conscience, and Cash: The Three Elements of Success in Business
An interactive seminar with Carol Sanford and Jeffrey Hollender
Thursday, November 9, 2006
7:30pm 9:30pm
EnlightenNext - 38 Cameron Avenue, Suite 100, Cambridge, MA
Reservations and info about the event: www.andrewcohen.org/boston/ccc.asp
Join Carol Sanford, a consultant for over 30 years to Fortune 500 companies, and Jeffrey Hollender, the CEO of Seventh Generation, for a special interactive seminar on the evolving role of conscience and consciousness in business.
Summary
Profits have always been considered an acceptable, if not the sole pursuit for corporations. In recent decades conscience has also found its way into the boardroom. As general awareness has grown about the impact of business decisionssending jobs overseas, relying on sweat shops for manufacturing, or damaging the environmentmore and larger companies are paying attention to their social and environmental impacts.
What is less understood and valued is the role of consciousness in business. Consciousness--the ability to observe and manage the activity of our minds toward a desired end--is critical for innovation and planning. Without consciousness we behave mechanically, our perspective is limited and artificially constructed, and we are destined to repeat patterns, even disastrous ones. Without consciousness, we cannot possibly change the future. But when we develop and evolve our consciousness, we expand how we perceive the world around us. We begin to see a more complex, nuanced view of reality. To generate new opportunities in business, we must develop the capacity for evolving our consciousness in order to achieve social and environmental responsibility as well as financial effectiveness.

"Rhyming for a Reason" An Evening of Song, Celebration and Powerful Poetry Featuring Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo
On Monday, November 13, 2006, The Berkana Institute, in partnership with José Mateo Ballet Theatre, will host the first annual Rhyming for a Reason: An Evening of Song, Celebration and Powerful Poetry to benefit The Berkana Institute.
The evening will feature an incredible line up of local and nationally acclaimed spoken-word poets such as Tim Merry, Derrick Ashong, 1-2-5 and Adam Stone, Margaret Wheatley and headlining act, Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo.
Iyeoka, a Nigerian-American poet/singer from Boston, was showcased in Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam airing on HBO and was a highlight on the late night CBS hip hop show The SOURCE ALL ACCESS. She has received numerous awards including the 2006 New England Urban Music Award for Best Female Spoke Word Poet, was commissioned by Arnold Worldwide to create a spoken-word poem to be used as a diversity training tool, and is the only poet to be on all six Boston Lizard Lounge Slam Teams.
The arts are a natural and universal form of expression that wakes us up and reconnects us to one another, says Berkana Co-President, Deborah Frieze. At Rhyming for a Reason, we'll be celebrating the power of the arts to create social change. These poets use spoken word to open up new ways for us to see our communities and to create new possibilities for community health, economic self-reliance and ecological sustainability.
Proceeds from the evening through ticket sales, sponsorship and the silent auction will benefit The Berkana Institute, a non-profit organization that connects pioneering leaders who are committed to strengthening their communities' leadership capacity and self-reliance by working with the wisdom and wealth already present in its people, traditions and environment. Led by Boston resident Deborah Frieze, Berkana conceived this event to gather the community to celebrate the power of the arts to create social change.
Rhyming for a Reason will be held at the José Mateo Ballet Theatre in Cambridge 400 Harvard Street on Monday, November 13, 2006 from 8:00 p.m. 10:30 p.m. Tickets for the event can be purchased at www.rhymingforareason.net . $50 in advance, $75 at the door, $15 with student ID. SoL Member Activities: Second Festival in the Workplace Dialogue
SoL Consultant Member Roosevelt Finlayson organized the second International Dialogue on Festival in the Workplace (FITW), this past June in Nassau, Bahamas. The theme was Transforming People and Organizations through the Creative Power of Festivals. Roosevelt is co-developer of FITW, which is a personal and organizational transformation process that stimulates people to become their most creative, productive and passionate selves.
FITW is based on lessons from festivals such as the annual Junkanoo Festival in The Bahamas and the carnivals of Trinidad and Brazil. Roosevelt says FITW serves as a catalyst for the development of a new organizational culture that ignites the creative spirit and passion for personal and organizational excellence. In such a culture, people experience joy, meaning and fulfillment. Read More...

SoL UK member Stephen Prosser wrote us recently to tell us about two of his books.
Effective People: Leadership and Organisation Development in Healthcare
Radcliffe Publishing, Oxford (UK) and Seattle (US)
This inspirational book analyses the attitudes and disciplines which make people - and the organizations for which they work - more effective, more productive and generally more successful. It is a valuable resource for leaders in the health service, and particularly for leaders of the future, including managers, clinicians, policy makers and academics. ADDITIONAL INFO. Between 1995 and 2001 I was the founding chief executive of the National Health Service Staff College (Wales) and this organization was devoted to developing the clinical and management staff of the NHS and the organizations in which they worked. The whole basis of the College and its work was influenced by OL, particularly The Fifth Discipline. The Staff College became a successful demonstration of OL in practice. In 2001 I became Professor of Leadership and Organisation Development at the University of Glamorgan and the book brings together my practical and theoretical knowledge of leadership and OD, but all of it is set against my firm commitment to OL.
Making It Happen in Public Service:
Devolution in Wales as a Case Study
Imprint Academic, Exeter, England
This book examines the change management strategies and processes employed to ensure that the Labour Government's commitment to devolution became a reality in Wales. As such, it is an account of constitutional, cultural, organizational and human change set within a dynamic political context and is based on unprecedented research access to devolution papers and the politicians and civil servants (past and present) concerned with the changes. It also demonstrates the role of leadership in such changes and makes a substantial contribution to organizational learning theory. The Permanent Secretary (the most senior civil servant) gave organizational learning as one of his main reasons for agreeing to have this book written. It tells the story of how public servants took the UK government's policy of devolving government and made it a reality. It has many lessons that are generic and can be applied to most public sector organizations and probably many private sector and not-for-profit organizations. .........................................................................
