An Innovative Approach to Education
Carol Gorelick, a long time SoL member, co-founded ABC Connects, a US and South Africa education not-for-profit corporation. Using schools as the engine for community organizing, ABC Connects works with schools and other education stakeholders to build school-community partnerships that strengthens schools and builds communities. The work is cross sector, developing partnerships between and among education, families, corporations, government and not-for-profit organizations. ABC Connects is a thoroughly innovative project that turns the entire community into an educational center. Several projects are underway in the United States and South Africa. During the Incubator and through a subsequent follow up SoL NA Community Call, Carol built on the ideas that ABC Connects is already working with and established several alliance with members and others who are excited about joining into her project.
Systems of Water Recovery and Management
Robert "Doc" Hall is the founder of The Compression Institute and an active SoL NA member. Drawing on Doc and his collaborators' extensive background in LEAN manufacturing, Compression is creating a network of action research groups to study any local system to make recommendations that will enable cities, towns and other communities "to do better with less". A couple of projects focused on water utilization are already underway, and Compression is also supporting a nascent group analyzing Safety and Security. Compression Thinking is an antidote to the implicit assumptions of expansionist thinking, which assumes that there are no limits to growth. Doc attended the first Incubator in Indianapolis looking for partners in the SoL NA community to join this effort and he will continue to present his work at an upcoming Spotlight Call that will focus on elaborating the results of the Compression thinking demonstration projects to date.
A New Mythology for Women
With the help of the Project Incubator, mathematician, physicist and technologist, Susan Gibson, created a fascinating project dedicated to creating "A New Mythology for Women". The project is using video to tell transformative stories of women who are change agents in their organizations, in particular, who've created idealistic, competent and liberating personal narratives. Susan joined SoL as a Connections Member in 2012 to take full advantage of the opportunity created by the Project Incubator to discuss her hopes, aspirations, concerns and ambiguities regarding this exciting and ground breaking learning adventure.
