SoL North America - Project Incubator

November 14, 2012, Indianapolis

Go to September 2013 Project Incubator

To celebrate SoL’s 15th Anniversary the SoL (NA) Council sponsored our first Project Incubator on November 14th in Indianapolis at the conclusion of the Pegasus Conference, attracting over 40 participants. The Incubator process is designed to build off the SoL (NA) Strategy Matrix, a set of themes and domains that are distinctive to the SoL community. This matrix was generated during conversations with Peter Senge over the course of the year.

While we don’t view the matrix as "finished” or necessarily "complete,” we are very pleased with the effectiveness of applying it to the Incubator in Indianapolis. The conversations and activities of the Incubator process generated a broad range of projects that will provide SoL members opportunities to collaborate with other members during 2013. Briefly seven projects emerged and were "incubated,” at the session in Indianapolis. They are:

  • School communities, an innovative approach to education that seeks to turn the entire community into an educational environment.
  • A New Mythology for Women, a collection of transformational stories by and about women, this project has already produced a website and blog.
  • Earth Science Systems Literacy, an idea for creation of a fieldbook widely used in university curriculum to foster an understanding of earth systems and dynamics.
  • Systems of Water Recovery and Management, learning how to use fewer resources while simultaneously improving the quality of life by putting power, tools and information in the hands of people really doing the work.
  • Making It!, a model for local economic development in disadvantaged urban areas emphasizing the home grown crafts and manufacturing, to be initiated in the Pittsburgh PA area.
  • Co-Laboratory: Collaborative Intrapreneuring, a project housed in the Bainbridge Graduate Institute and part of the Organization Systems Renewal MA program. This project is up and running and looking for collaborators.
  • Local Level Climate Change Action, an approach to greening small cities by becoming carbon neutral. This seeks to identify leverage points for systems in place and create activities to produce community-based change. Initially, in Chicago area.

Each of these projects provides SOL members with opportunities to work with each other in collaboration, creating new applications of systems thinking in the world. If you like to learn more about these projects, how you can participate or contribute, please contact Michael Sales.

Our success with the Project Incubator has the Council imagining many more to follow and we encourage any of you interested in participating or hosting one to contact Michael Sales. For example, we imagine this methodology as powerful for organizations and communities of all sorts and we’ll need the participation of members to help us facilitate and grow these projects.

We look forward to hearing from you.

The SoL (NA) Council
Mark Alpert, Stephen Gianotti, Deborah Reidy, Michael Sales, and Frank Schneider
