Presence: An Exploration of Profound Change in People, Society, and Organizations
Presence is an intimate look at the development of a new theory about change and learning. In wide-ranging conversations held over a year and a half, organizational learning pioneers Peter Senge, C. Otto Scharmer, Joseph Jaworski, and Betty Sue Flowers explored the nature of transformational change—how it arises, and the fresh possibilities it offers a world dangerously out of balance. The book introduces the idea of “presence”—a concept borrowed from the natural world that the whole is entirely present in any of its parts—to the worlds of business, education, government, and leadership. Too often, the authors found, we remain stuck in old patterns of seeing and acting. By encouraging deeper levels of learning, we create an awareness of the larger whole, leading to actions that can help to shape its evolution and our future.

Inside Out: Stories and Methods for Generating Collective Will to Create the Future We Want
Inside Out, by Tracy Huston builds on U-theory by exploring “collective presencing” approaches for developing the personal, relational, and systemic conditions needed to support leaders in collaborating across their institutional boundaries to create the future they want. Drawing from her work in multi-stakeholder change initiatives, as well as from a variety of "ensemble" practices employed in the arts, Huston offers a rich mix of stories, cases, and practical methods for generating and sustaining whole system change, from the “inside-out."

Drawn from the introductory chapters of Presence, this article looks at what will be required to "create the world anew." Pointing out that the key is to see "that we have choices, and that our choices matter," the authors conclude that we will be called to participate in changes that are both deeply personal and inherently systemic. The article is accompanied by commentaries from Darcy Winslow of Nike, the UNDP's Elena Diez Pinto, and Robert Fritz, author of The Path of Least Resistance. Read the article...
